HIGHLANDERS SHUT OUT WINTHROP IN SERIES OPENER

JENKINS TOSSES SECOND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. –
Jackie Jenkins spun a five-hit shutout and Radford took advantage of four Winthrop errors with timely hitting in a 7-0 victory in its Big South series opener, Friday evening from RU Softball Field.

Jenkins (W, 14-2) was in cruise control after allowing two one-out singles in the first. She would retire 15 straight after those hits, before surrendering three singles in the final two frames. Jenkins did not walk a batter and struck out four as the righty recorded her second straight shutout and has allowed just one earned run over the last 46.1 innings of league play.

Seniors Taylor Cunningham, Shannon Keefe and Kristen Shifflett each had two hits for the Highlanders (29-15, 10-2 Big South). Cunningham recorded a pair of doubles, her 11th and 12th of the season and scored two runs, while Keefe knocked in two runs.

Chelsey Schoenfeldt (L, 8-12) suffered the defeat as she allowed just two earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.

Five different Eagles (15-29, 5-11) recorded singles.

A little two-out magic put Radford on the board in the first. Cunningham just missed a home run as she doubled off the fence in left center and Keefe blooped a single into right for a 1-0 Highlander lead.

Radford added an unearned run on an error in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

Cunningham and Keefe provided the first two runs of the fifth. Cunningham stroked an RBI double to rightcenter and then Keefe knocked in a run with a slow chopper to short. The last run of the frame came as Cunningham scored on a perfect squeeze bunt by Michelle Beall.

In the top of the sixth, Megan Chapman ended Jenkins' streak blooping a single just over the second baseman, but the righty ended the inning on three pitches.

Radford would add two more and cap the scoring in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Shifflett and a RBI groundout.

In the seventh, the Eagles recorded a pair of singles, but on the second, a shot over the first base bag by Veronica Berrie, right fielder Hannah Ojeda threw a bullet to third nailing the runner for the second out of the frame. It was Ojeda's third assist in as many games and the second straight at third base.

Ojeda also singled and scored a run.

The teams will close out with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Radford's senior class of Cunningham, Shifflett, Keefe, Chelsea Kelley, Kellie Snooks and Lauren Williams) will be recognized prior to start of doubleheader.
