ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Radford banged out 36 hits in two games on the way to a doubleheader and series sweep of UNC Asheville with 10-4 and 10-1 wins on Saturday afternoon.
The Highlanders (24-15, 10-5 Big South) have picked up four straight Big South series wins, back-to-back sweeps, and own an eight-game winning streak in league play.
GAME 1: RADFORD 10, UNC ASHEVILLE 4
Matt Mack went 4-for-5 and doubled twice, Radford scored seven two-out runs, and the Highlanders cruised to a win.
Brett Mollenhauer and
Carl Travers added 3-for-4 games as part of a 16-hit outburst for the Highlanders. Right-hander
Mark Peterson added 7 1/3 innings of work on the way to his fourth win (4-1), striking out six to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
Alex Guerra, Mack, and
Ryan Burgess had RBI hits with two outs in the first inning to help Radford jump out to a 3-0 lead. Travers had a leadoff single in the second and came home with two outs on
Zach Costello's single to make it 4-0.
Up 6-2 going in to the seventh, the Highlanders got three more two-out runs on consecutive RBI hits by Mack, Burgess and Mollenhauer to make it a 10-2 game.
Radford, after stranding 12 base runners in the first game of the series, left only four on. UNC Asheville stranded 11 runners.
Jordan Lurie went 4-for-5 in the leadoff slot for the Bulldogs, who scored just four runs on 12 hits. Grier Harrington surrendered five runs in four innings in the loss (3-7)
GAME 2: RADFORD 10, UNC ASHEVILLE 1
Four Radford pitchers worked without allowing an earned run,
Alex Guerra was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and the Highlanders cruised in the second game.
Radford had 18 hits in the second game –
Matt Hillsinger and
Jeff Kemp went 3-for-5 each.
Bobby Bolling posted his second start in a row without allowing an earned run – striking out five in six innings on the way to his fifth win (5-2). Bolling set the side down in order three times before giving way to three relievers –
Brad Wimmer,
Jake Quigg and
Jason Patten – who threw scoreless innings the rest of the way.
For the second straight game, the Highlanders jumped on the board first when Mack hit a bases-loaded single with one out to score two early runs. Radford capitalized with the bases loaded again in the fourth, as Kemp hit a single through the left side to bring home a pair and make it a 4-1 game. Guerra knocked in another run on the next play to extend the lead to five runs. Another bases loaded situation yielded two more runs in the fifth – with two outs, Mollenhauer came home on a passed ball, and on the next play, Costello stole second, allowing
Daniel Wright to score from third and make the score 7-1.
Patrick Koontz was 3-for-4 for UNC Asheville, and Cody Buch drove in the only run for the Bulldogs in the second on a groundout. Tommy Houmard surrendered five runs on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings for the loss (2-2).
Radford returns home for four of the next five games, beginning Tuesday night against Appalachian State. UNC Asheville is off for the next 10 days.
