BOX SCORE
BECKLEY, W.Va. –
Ryan Burgess hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and drove in four runs, leading Radford to a 9-7 win over Marshall on Tuesday at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
The game was seven innings - a second game was to be played, but was called due to rain and potential severe weather.
Burgess snapped a scoreless drought for the Highlanders (26-21) that extended for better than four games when he hit his first home run of the season in the fourth, sparking a seven-run inning that put Radford ahead to stay. The win stopped a six-game losing streak.
Matt Mack went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs on a double that capped the scoring in Radford's seven-run fourth – Mack went hitless in the Coastal Carolina series.
Brett Mollenhauer was 2-for-3 and
Carl Travers went 1-for-2 with a two-run single with two outs in the fourth.
“Scoring runs gives you a better chance of winning, I learned that the past couple of games,” head coach
Joe Raccuia said. “I'm glad we played today and I'm glad we gave ourselves an opportunity to win. We played a solid game, and needed it bad.
"Burgess had a big hit for us, Travers had a huge hit for us with two outs, and then tacking on late runs was important and something that we haven't done in a long time – getting and extending leads.”
Marshall (18-27) hit four solo home runs in the game – Victor Gomez hit blasts in the second and fourth innings, Rhett Stafford hit one to lead off the second, and Thor Meeks added another to key a three-run bottom of the sixth that brought the Thundering Herd within a run, 8-7. Stafford and Meeks each went 3-for-4.
Burgess gave the Highlanders an insurance run in the top of the seventh on his one-out double that scored
Alex Guerra. Guerra walked to lead off the inning.
Abram Williams, who entered the game with a run in, two on and none out in the sixth, got outs on three of the next five batters he faced to keep Radford ahead. Williams allowed a hit in the ninth with one out, but nothing further as he picked up his 12th save on 14 chances this season.
Brad Wimmer worked an inning of relief following the seven-run fourth to pick up the win (3-3) for Radford. Greg Williams started the game for Marshall and took the loss (1-1).
