BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. – Radford plated three second inning runs following a 56-minute rain delay and never looked back in a 5-4 win in the rubber game of a Big South series on Sunday afternoon.
The game was delayed one hour from its original 11 a.m. start time due to rain, then another rain stoppage in the middle of the second inning halted play just before the Highlanders (28-22, 12-12 Big South) scored three times to grab the lead for good and take the series from High Point (23-29, 8-16).
Radford got RBIs from five different players and got 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief from right-handers
Jake Quigg and
Abram Williams to close out the game. Quigg struck out three, and Williams had a strikeout and allowed a hit before getting a 6-4-3 game-ending double play to wrap up his conference-leading 14th save of the season.
“After the delay, we got jump-started, which was good,” head coach
Joe Raccuia said. “[Brett] Mollenhauer and [Matt] Hillsinger had big hits in the inning when we came back and that got us going, and we kept it up.
“Bobby gave us a good start after sitting through the rain delay, and the guy who won it for us was
Jake Quigg. He was outstanding and gave us a chance to finish it off – he was lights out.”
Zach Costello went 3-for-3 with a walk, and
Blake Sipe was 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Highlanders.
Brett Mollenhauer sparked the three runs in the second with a triple, the first at-bat following the rain delay. He came home on
Daniel Wright's groundout to the right side, tying the game at 1-1. After Sipe's single,
Matt Hillsinger doubled him in for the go-ahead run, then
Alex Guerra singled to knock in Hillsinger and give Radford a 3-1 lead.
After back-to-back one-out RBIs from
Ryan Burgess and
Carl Travers in the fifth, High Point brought home three sixth-inning runs. Murray White IV doubled to begin the inning, Scott Glover singled, then Kyle Mahoney launched a triple to the gap in left field to score both runs and cut the Radford lead to a pair, 5-3. Preston Packrall, who went 2-for-3, singled home Mahoney on the next play to make it a 5-4 game.
Packrall singled to begin the ninth and Drew Geissinger reached on a ground ball to third, where the out was attempted at second by
Matt Mack, but Packrall slid in before the throw, putting the go-ahead run on base. Williams got a double play ball off the bat of Steve Antolik to end the game and give the Highlanders the series win, their first in two weekends.
Bobby Bolling went 5 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs, striking out five and pitching through the rain delay to earn his sixth win (6-4). High Point starter Corey Swickle pitched through the delay as well and took the loss (3-5).
