RADFORD, Va. –
Junior Mary Wiley (Radford, Va./Radford) converted the game-winning goal on a direct corner in the 87th minute to push Radford women's soccer past Francis Marion, 2-0, Friday night.

Minutes after Wiley subbed back in from a short rest, she set up to take the corner and bent it strategically past the Francis Marion keeper, just inside the near post.

“Yesterday we were working on corners in practice and I wasn't kicking them correctly,” commented Wiley.  “Coach asked me to keeping testing their keeper because she kept dropping corners.  I was just trying to aim towards the back post, hoping the keeper would juggle it and we would get the second ball, but it worked out better the way it happened.”

Shortly after, freshman Chelsea Hayes (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) added the insurance goal when she took the ball from a defender, side-stepped and found the back of the net for her second collegiate goal.

“Give credit to Francis Marion because they are a hard-working team and very organized defensively.  I think we wore them down and even played six forwards in the game and as a result we kept getting chances and corners,” said head coach Ben Sohrabi.  “I'm very happy with the result and how we played.”

The Highlanders held a commanding edge in shots, 19-1, and corners, 8-2.

Goalkeeper Che' Brown (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) started for the first time this season and picked up the win.  Despite the loss, Lauren Vetock made four saves for the Patriots.
