BOX SCORE
BOONE, N.C. – Luis Grande (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos) scored 49 seconds into overtime to give Radford a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State in both club's season opener Saturday afternoon at the Ted Mackorell Complex.
Fellow sophomore and midfielder
Chel Ho Kim Park (Santander, Spain / Universidad Europea de Madrid) assisted Grande's first career game-winner, a strike from the top of the penalty area.
"It was a great goal to win it,” said Highlander head coach
Marc Reeves, who is now 2-0 in season openers. “
Dario Redondo (Woodbridge, Va. / Garfield) did an excellent job of carrying the ball under pressure and connecting with Chel, who laid it off for Luis.
The Mountaineers, who went 6-1-0 at home a year ago, finished with a 9-6 edge in shots, while both teams put four attempts on frame.
“Appalachian State (0-1-0) is a good team and this was a very tough place to get a win.”
Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar), who had a couple of decent scoring chances, led the Highlanders with three shots.
"We had some solid performances, but must get better as Team in many aspects.”
Ryan Taylor (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian), who missed most of last season due to injury, recorded a game-high four saves en route to his second career shutout for the Highlanders.
"We defended pretty solidly in most areas and it was good to get a shutout in our first game,” Reeves said.
Radford (1-0-0) will enjoy a six-day break before traveling to Washington, D.C. and College Park, Md., for contests with Georgetown (9/2) and Maryland (9/4).
"We need to have a strong week of practice as we have two incredibly tough opponents next weekend."
