GWANZURA’S HAT TRICK LEADS MEN’S SOCCER TO 3-0 WIN OVER STONY BROOK

BOX SCORE

HIGH POINT, N.C. –
On the heels of his first goal in over a year, Radford's Brian Gwanzura (Harare, Zimbabwe / Harare) struck three more times Sunday for his first career hat trick as the Highlanders blanked Stony Brook, 3-0, on the final day of the Flash Gordon Motors Invitational hosted by High Point University.

Prior to scoring the first goal of the contest in the Highlanders' 5-1 win over St. Bonaventure Friday, Gwanzura's last strike came in Radford's (3-2-0) season-opening win at Mt. St. Mary's last season.

"Stony Brook (1-2-2) is a talented and well-coached team that we had a solid performance against today,” said Radford head coach Marc Reeves. “Both sides had some chances but Brian's performance in all areas was the difference in the game.”

Gwanzura gave his club a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of strikes midway through the opening period. His eventual game-winner came off a 17th minute header set up by fellow midfielders Chel Ho Kim Park (Santander, Spain) and Dario Redondo (Woodbridge, Va. / Garfield).

For Kim Park, it was his team-leading fourth assist on the young season.

Less than four minutes later, Gwanzura found the back of the net on a blast from just inside the 18-yard box off an assist from Luis Grande (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos).

In the 83rd minute, Gwanzura put the finishing touches on his memorable day and the game out of reach when Grande laid a ball off to the senior from just in front. Freshman Ramzi Dridi (Falls Church, Va. / JEB Stuart) also recorded an assist on Gwanzura's fourth goal of the tournament.

The Highlanders' Ryan Taylor (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) recorded three saves en route to his third career shutout.

"We are pleased with the shutout as our center backs James (Jordan) and Aldo (Macias) had an outstanding weekend and Ryan was very solid in the goal."

Radford will enjoy a nine-day break before concluding its six-game trip away from home to begin the 2011 season at Virginia on Tuesday, September 20.

"It is still very early in the season, but these are good victories in building a winning mentality. We had good preparation in a quick turn around and need to continue to train hard and improve."
