RADFORD, Va. – Sophomore
Julie Ruh'e (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) found the back of the net in the 79th minute to give Radford women's soccer a 1-0, hard-fought victory over in-state foe Longwood Friday night.
On the 11th shot of the game, Ruh'e gathered a loose ball in the box and slid the ball into the left side, putting Radford up 1-0. Her score was the fourth this season, fourth career game-winner, and for the second consecutive year, she became the first Highlander to reach the double-digit points mark.
“It was a good road win for us tonight and I was happy with the way our team played,” said head coach
Ben Sohrabi. “We had a lot of heart tonight.”
The win for Radford (5-2) was the first over Longwood (2-4-3) since the 2008 title year and was the first-ever triumph in Farmville.
Che' Brown (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) made her second consecutive start for the Highlanders and has posted back-to-back shutouts. With the clean sheet, Brown moved into a tie with fellow keeper
Lisa Lubke (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) for fifth all-time in career shutouts with 10.
The Lancers exited the locker room at halftime on a mission to put pressure on the Radford defense. Brown, however, stepped up to make four saves within a span of 5:21. She made a season-high six stops on the night.
In every victory this season the Highlanders have out-shot the opposition and tonight held true as well, with Radford controlling the attack, 13-8.
