BOX SCORE
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown's Steve Neumann scored two first-half goals 1:19 apart as the Hoyas upended Radford, 2-0 in men's soccer action on Friday afternoon at North Kehoe Field.
In the 24th minute, Jimmy Nealis served the ball across the box to John Snyder, who tapped it back up top to Neumann for the game's first strike and eventual game-winner.
Off the ensuing kickoff, Neumann found the back of the net from about 30 yards out.
“We had a very average first half against a good Georgetown (1-1-0) team and put ourselves in a tough spot,” said Highlander head coach
Marc Reeves. “The second half we created some great chances and generally played with more energy.”
Despite the setback, Radford (1-1-0) had a number of scoring chances, including opportunities by
Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar),
Ramzi Dridi (Falls Church, Va. / JEB Stuart) and
Luis Grande (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos).
Awosika and Dridi's near misses came in on the keeper, while Grande was unable to convert a header off an
Anthony Payne (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) corner.
“We must play better defensively and make key big plays in these type of games,” Reeves said.
Both teams finished with 10 shots, while the Hoyas held a slim edge in corners (5-4) and shots on goal (5-2).
Radford will continue its six-game road trip to begin the 2011 season with a 7 p.m. match at No. 4 Maryland on Sunday.
