RADFORD, Va. – In a weather-shortened contest, the Radford women's soccer team defeated Alabama A&M 4-0 on Friday night behind two goals from freshman
Nicole Johnston (Liverpool, England/Chesterfield).
The Highlanders wasted no time attacking, as
Julie Ruh'e (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) and
Chelsea Hayes (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) connected on a double assist to Johnston, who netted her first collegiate goal just 21 seconds into the match.
A nearside cross in the 31st minute was deflected off the Alabama A&M keeper's hands and Johnston was waiting eagerly and put in her second goal of the game, giving the Highlanders a 2-0 advantage.
"It was quite a messy game, but to be able to get two goals for the first time in my young career was phenomenal," said Johnston.
With 13:43 remaining in the first half, play was halted due to inclement weather. When it resumed, Radford tacked on goals by Ruh'e in the 44th and Hayes in the 68th to cap the scoring.
Radford held the commanding edge in shots, 25-2.
Lisa Lubke (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) picked up her second win of the season while the Bulldogs' Linda Aboagye had nine saves in the loss.
"It was good to get a win tonight and good to get the shutout, but we still have to be tighter on the ball and make more of our opportunities," commented head coach
Ben Sohrabi.
