RADFORD, Va. – Radford used two second-half goals from
Rachel Conway (Ontario, Canada) and
Sahar Aflaki (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) to defeat Presbyterian, 2-0, and capture its first conference win of the season Thursday night in women's soccer action.
After 12 first half strikes, the Highlanders (6-3, 1-0 BSC) got on the board in the 51st minute when
Sydney Golden (Lexington, Ky./Paul L. Dunbar) setup for a free kick and found
Mary Wiley (Radford, Va./Radford) who headed the ball down to Conway. Conway collected and beat the keeper to the right for a 1-0 lead. For Conway, it was her second career game-winner and she also matched a career-high with four shots.
Aflaki provided a spark of energy off the bench and her work was rewarded in the 72nd minute. She settled a ball around the penalty area and placed a shot inside the upper left 90 to cap the scoring at 2-0.
“I think Presbyterian (2-8, 0-1 BSC) played a great defensive game and they were tough to break down,” commented head coach
Ben Sohrabi. “We finally got one to fall and then another but it's nice to get the first conference win because they are tough to come by.”
Reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week and Presbyterian keeper Sarah Beth Anderson was under fire all night by the Highlander attack, but despite the two goals, made seven great saves.
Che' Brown (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) picked up her third win of the season and recorded another shutout, moving into fifth all-time in career clean sheets with 11.
