NO. 4 MARYLAND HOLDS OFF MEN’S SOCCER, 2-1

BOX SCORE

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite Anthony Payne's (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) 62nd minute strike, Radford fell to No. 4 Maryland, 2-1, in men's soccer action Sunday evening at Ludwig Field.

"Maryland obviously is a great program and congratulations to coach Cirovski on his 300th win," said Radford head coach Marc Reeves. "We played very well tonight and were unlucky not to get something from the game."

The setback drops the Highlanders to 1-2-0 on the young season, while the nationally-ranked Terrapins remain undefeated improving to 4-0-0.

Maryland scored both its goals midway through the opening period. Patrick Mullins struck from 15-yards out in the 20th minute, while Casey Townsend provided the eventual game-winner 10 minutes later.

After threatening with a number of scoring chances early in the second half, including a Chel Ho Kim Park (Santander, Spain) shot that hit the post, Radford got on the board with Payne's first goal of the fall.

Payne's blast from outside the 18-yard box came off a rebound following a Radford corner kick.

"We had great performances from many players and along with scoring a very good goal, had some other great chances."

Bernardo Ulmo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / South Kent) and Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar) also had a couple of scoring opportunities for the Highlanders.

In addition to holding a 15-8 advantage in shots, the Terrapins finished with a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Ryan Taylor (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) led both goalkeepers with a pair of saves.

Along with Taylor, Aldo Macias (Dumfries, Va. / Edison) and Matt Janssen (McLean, Va. / McLean) turned in solid defensive efforts for the Highlanders.

"It was a good learning experience against a top-ranked opponent and good crowd, but we need this type of preparation, energy and execution against all teams to have a successful season."

Radford will continue its six-game stretch away from home to begin the season at the High Point tournament next weekend.
