HIGHLANDERS ESCAPE GARDNER-WEBB ON CONWAY'S LATE STRIKE

BOX SCORE BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Junior Rachel Conway struck in the 87th minute as Radford women's soccer escaped with a 1-0 win at Gardner-Webb in a tough Big South battle from Greene-Harbison Field, Thursday evening.

The Highlanders (10-2-1, 6-0-1 Big South) extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches, tying the program's single season record set in 1993 and twice in 2008.  Radford has also started undefeated after seven Big South regular season matches for the first time in school history. It breaks the previous mark of six obtained last year and 1999.

The victory also keeps Radford a point ahead of Longwood and two ahead of High Point, both one-goal winners tonight.

Knocking on the door all night, the Highlanders and Conway found paydirt with just 3:20 left in the match. She took a short slip from junior Tyler Drake and her waist high shot snuck in the near post as the keeper looked on. It was her sixth goal, tying for the team lead, and second game-winning strike of the season. Her first game-winner came in Radford's season opener against Howard in double overtime.

The Highlanders outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs (2-11-1, 1-5-1), 21-9, but GWU keeper Amy Schmitt kept them in the contest with 10 saves. Che' Brown stopped three shots as she posted her seventh clean sheet of the season, while the Radford recorded its third straight shutout and eighth in 2012.

Radford went into the break scoreless. The Highlanders had an early goal waved off by an offside call a minute into the contest and then Kim Harkins was denied 1v1 by the GWU keeper Amy Schmitt in the 37th minute as the ball deflected off her and the post.

The Bulldogs' (2-11-1, 1-5-1) best chance came with two minutes to go. However, Brown made a tremendous stop on Gardner-Webb's first shot on goal of the match.

Radford remains on the road Saturday when it takes on Winthrop at 4:00 p.m.
