POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Weston Eklund continued his torrid streak with a 2-under-par 70 Tuesday at the par 72, 6,535-yard Kilmarlic Golf Club, to tie Scott Wolfes of Georgia Southern for the top spot in the 94-player field in the final round of the ODU/OBX Invitational. Wolfes and Eklund will share medalist honors, despite Wolfes winning a one-hole playoff between the two nationally-ranked golfers.
The Highlanders finished fourth with a 5-over-par 869 (299-283-287), which was one shot behind tournament host Old Dominion's 868 (295-288-285) and three shots behind runner-up Richmond's 866 (295-291-280). Georgia Southern led wire-to-wire in claiming the tournament title with a 10-under-par 854 (290-287-277).
En route to his team-leading seventh sub-par round of the season, Eklund logged four birdies in a nine-hole stretch Tuesday. After the senior made his final birdie of the day at the par-5 12th hole, Eklund took a two-shot lead over Wolfes heading into the final six holes. Eklund clung to a one-shot edge going into the last hole, but Wolfes sank a birdie at the par-5 18th to tie the Charlottesville, Va. native at 207.
Through Radford's three tournaments this fall, Eklund has finished no higher than a tie for fourth at the season-opening Raines Development Group Intercollegiate, where he shot 5-under-par. After his career-best 9-under total in the Outer Banks, Eklund's scoring average improves to a Big South-leading 69.6.
Posting his second straight Top-20 finish of the season, Callum Tarren finished tied for 18th at 219 (72-76-71). The junior opened the day with two birdies at the par-3 second hole and the par-5 fourth hole. After dropping two shots at holes 5 and 6, Tarren played 1-under for the remaining 12 holes to card his third sub-par round of the season.
Conner Hayden matched his career-best 1-under-par 71 in the final round Tuesday. After giving up a shot at the 526-yard fourth hole, Hayden reeled off back-to-back birdies at holes 9 and 10 to move to 1-under for the day. A bogey two holes later dropped him back to even, but the freshman got back to red figures at the par-5 18th to finish 1-under for the round. He tied for 37th at 225 (79-75-71), along with his teammates Matt Harman (75-73-77) and Tanner Carbaugh (79-71-75).
The Highlanders conclude their fall slate at next week's Wendy's Kiawah Classic hosted by Charleston Southern Sunday-Tuesday (Oct. 28-30) on the Turtle Point layout at the Kiawah Island Resort.
