GREENSBORO, N.C. – Winthrop's Alex Isern scored his second goal of the match three minutes into overtime to give the sixth-seeded Eagles (10-8-1) a 2-1 upset victory over second-seeded Radford in the second Big South Men's Soccer semifinal from Bryan Park.
On an individual effort, Isern dribbled across the top of the box and after a challenge, he placed his shot into the lower right corner for the game-winner.
Junior Bernardo Ulmo scored his team-leading 11th goal, while red-shirt senior goalkeeper Ryan Taylor made six saves for the Highlanders (10-6-4).
“Winthrop is a physical and talented team that played well tonight,” commented head coach Marc Reeves. “It could have gone either way. We are obviously disappointed to lose. I'd like to thank our two seniors, support staff and coaches for all their hard work throughout the year.”
The squads went into break tied at 1-apiece in a very physical first half, which saw 13 fouls and seven shots by each team.
The Highlanders struck very early when Ulmo found the back of the net 93 seconds into the match. On a free kick from about 30 yards on the right, freshman Jannik Eckenrode played the ball to the top of the box where junior Chel Ho Park Kim slipped the ball to Ulmo in the six and he slotted it low into the far post.
For Park Kim it was his team-best fifth helper of the season.
The Eagles tied it in the 21st minute when Isern headed home a rebound after Taylor saved Magnus Thorsson's blast off the crossbar.
Winthrop outshot Radford, 16-12 and held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. Ulmo paced the Highlanders with three shots, while Isern charted a match-high five.
