SAMFORD TAKES SERIES WITH 12-2 WIN OVER RADFORD BASEBALL

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– Samford collected 15 hits and posted five multi-run innings on the way to a 12-2 win over Radford in the opening weekend series finale on Sunday.
 
Jeff Kemp (Bowie, Md., Archbishop Spalding) led the Highlanders (1-2) with a 3-for-3 afternoon and an RBI single in the seventh inning.   For the series, Kemp was 7-for-13 with five doubles and four RBIs, returning to the lineups after missing the final 16 games of 2011.
 
Kemp accounted for Radford's other run in the top of the first inning when he doubled with one out before coming home on a Matt Mack (Davidsonville, Md., St. John's College H.S.) RBI single.
 
Samford (2-1) was again led at the plate by Saxon Butler, who went 3-for-3 and hit a two-run homer, his second of the series, that gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first and sparked nine unanswered runs.  Butler was retired just once in the series, finishing 9-for-10. 
 
Austin Allison was 3-for-4 and hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.  Zeth Stone added a 3-for-4 afternoon with RBI singled in the
 
Ryan Burgess (Richmond, Va., Steward School) had the other multi-hit effort for the Highlanders, a 2-for-4 day.
 
Samford starter Josh Martin allowed a run on seven hits and struck out four in 5 1/3 innings to earn his first win.  Righty Keith Fritz (Baltimore, Md., Archbishop Curley) took the loss in his first Radford start, allowing seven runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
 
Radford is scheduled to play next at Liberty on Tuesday in a non-conference game at 3 p.m.  However, that game could be impacted by field conditions after weekend snowfall in western and central Virginia.
