MEN’S GOLF SETS OUT FOR FIRST OF SIX SPRING EVENTS

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's golf team will set out for the first of six spring events when they tee off in the Wexford Intercollegiate Feb. 20-21 in Hilton Head, S.C.

The two-day event, which features 17 teams, will be held at the Wexford Plantation and played on a 6,828-yard, par-72 layout.

“We are very excited about having everyone healthy and ready to go. The guys have been working as hard as any group I have ever coached and there is a renewed sense of commitment,” commented head coach Mike Grant.

Senior Michael Wade will lead the way for Radford, as he did in three of the four fall tournaments. Wade currently has a 71.0 stroke average, fourth best in the Big South. He also tied for first in the conference with four Top-10 finishes. Furthermore, Wade is three shots ahead of his career-low season stroke average (74.4) set last year.

Weston Eklundwill also find himself towards the top of individual leaderboards in the spring. In the fall, Eklund was second to Wade in stroke average at 72.2 and seventh best in the league. Eklund's fall highlights included a career-low 66 in the season-opening Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate, where he also set a new 54-hole personal-best (210) and finished fourth overall.

“Mike and Weston are the leaders of this team and it is important for them to set a good example for the rest of the guys. They put high expectations upon themselves, which really carries over the entire program. I look for both of those guys to have great spring seasons.”

After a great freshman campaign, Matt Harmanmade his season debut in the Hummingbird Intercollegiate with a 151. Though he only played in one event in the fall, Harman will make a solid contribution in the spring.

Tanner Carbaugh and Callum Tarren will round out the five players slated for competition this weekend.

Nine of Paul Woodson's 11 rounds were counted towards a team score in the fall. He shot two rounds in the 60's, three sub-par rounds and his top showing came at the Outer Banks Intercollegiate (T-15th).

Wade Wawner and Ryan Rettbergand will vie for the remaining team slots throughout the spring.

“The whole idea of playing six tournaments in the spring is to prepare for our conference tournament by giving us some extra competition and also to identify the lineup that will work for us. I truly expect us to be a factor at the end of the year.”
