RESULTS
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Aimee Veatch won her third Big South weight throw title,
Travis Hudson took all-conference honors and Radford had 10 athletes qualify for the finals on the first day of the Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday from Rector Field House.
Veatch threw 18.36m / 60-03.00 to take top honors. Alongside her Big South Champion status, it was also her fourth straight indoor season as an all-conference athlete.
Hudson cleared the bar at 2.00m / 6-06.75 in the high jump to take third place and earn his first career all-conference distinction.
The men's distance medley relay team consisting of
Chris Weeks,
Brett Olinger,
Jake Zimmerman and
Brian Gorwitz placed fourth and broke a 12-year-old school record with their time of 10:12.74.
Throws
Curtis Hodge tossed the 35-pound weight a personal-best 18.37m / 60-03.25 to grab fourth place.
Brian Uthe wrapped up the event in seventh place with a distance of 16.18m / 53-01.00.
Sharee Fitzgerald recorded a 16.44m / 53-11.25 distance in the women's weight throw to place sixth.
Sprints
Allen Dooms and
Joseph Betts each qualified for the 60m dash final tomorrow with times of 6.90 and 6.99, respectively.
Lakei Crews also ran right into the finals in the 60m, as she tied a personal-best with an 8.71 prelim time.
Betts returned to run the third fastest time in Radford history with a 21.85 in the 200m. Joining him with a qualifying time was
Tehquin Warrick at 22.08.
In the men's 400m,
Kaise White crossed the stripe at 49.83, while Warrick also advanced to Saturday's final with his time of 49.48.
Eric Graves paved his way to the finals in the 800m with a 1:56.43, his best indoor time.
Shalonda Mitchell finished eighth on the women's side with a 2:19.00 to hold the eighth and final qualifying spot.
Hurdles
Vincent Wyatt, Olinger and Hudson all qualified for the finals of the 60m hurdles with times of 8.07, 8.28 and 8.59, respectively. Wyatt took second, Olinger finished third and Hudson qualified in eighth place. In addition, Olinger and Hudson each set a new PR.
Jumps
With a season-best 13.87m / 45-06.25 distance,
Antonio Miller grabbed fifth place in the men's triple jump.
Jamiecka Baker posted a personal-best 11.31m / 37-01.25 on the women's side to place ninth.
Multi's
Phillip Hovatter turned in a pair of third-place finishes in the opening heptathlon events with a 7.35 in the 60m dash and a personal-best 6.94m / 22-09.25 mark in the long jump. He posted another second-place showing in the shot put with an 11.87m / 38-11.50 mark to take second overall. Through four events, Hovatter remains in second place with 2,804 points, ahead of the school-record pace (2,675) he set a year ago at the championships.
