BOX SCORE 2 RADFORD, Va. – Radford rebounded from a Presbyterian College's 5-3 win in the opener, taking the second game 9-8 on
Zach Costello's walk-off hit to split a Big South doubleheader on Saturday and earn a series win.
Brad Zebedis hit four homers, going 6-for-9 with eight RBIs to lead the Blue Hose (19-25, 7-11 Big South) – Zebedis went 4-for-4 with three home runs in the second doubleheader game.
Brett Mollenhauer went 4-for-8 in two games for Radford, including three 3-for-4 in Radford's (25-18, 10-5) nightcap win with three RBIs.
GAME 1 – PRESBYTERIAN 5, RADFORD 3
Presbyterian rapped out 12 hits and
Tyler Costello's consecutive win streak came to an end in a win for the Blue Hose in the first game.
Zebedis belted a two-run homer with one out in the third inning, the first of four homers for the day.
The Highlanders tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning.
Brett Mollenhauer led the inning off with a single and was moved over by a productive out from
Matt Hillsinger.
Matt Mack reached on a single which was followed by a sacrifice fly from
Cory Turner to score Mollenhauer.
Patrick Marshall then tied the game on the next at-bat with his first career RBI and double, bringing home Mack to make it 2-2.
The Blue Hose answered with three runs in the fifth. With two outs and runner on first, Costello intentionally walked Kenny Bryant to get to Nathan Chong, who dropped a two-run double into left field, scoring Motroni and Bryant and making it a 4-2 lead for the Blue Hose. On the next play, Peden reached base on a throwing error that allowed Chong to score, improving their lead to 5-2.
Radford got one of those runs back in the seventh. Pinch-hitter
Blake Sipe led off with a single and was followed by
Phil Bondi's RBI double, cutting Presbyterian's lead to 5-3.
Costello threw a season-high 110 pitches in six innings, and allowed four earned runs on nine hits while striking out four in his first collegiate loss (7-1).
Chandler Knox got the win (3-2), going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits.
Gabe Grammer came in to shut the door for the Blue Hose by striking out the side and collecting his eighth save of the year.
GAME TWO – RADFORD 9, PRESBYTERIAN 8
Brad Zebedis went 4-for-4 and hit three homers, but Radford split the doubleheader and won the series in walk-off fashion with a
Zach Costello double in the ninth to split.
Blake Sipe and
Brett Mollenhauer had three hits each for the Highlanders in the win.
Presbyterian wasted no time getting on the board early in the second game with three runs in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Andrew Williams walked and Motroni followed with a single, setting up a three-run home run by Zebedis, his second homer of the day.
The Highlanders answered back in their half of the first with a
Matt Mack single that chased home
Josh Gardiner, cutting Presbyterian's lead to 3-1.
Zebedis charged another homer over the left field fence in the third, increasing the Blue Hose lead to 4-1.
Radford pulled back within one run in the fourth.
Hunter Higgerson got it started with a single and was followed by another single from Sipe. Mollenhauer knocked home both runners with a bases clearing double to left center to pull within a run, 4-3.
Presbyterian started a string of four straight two-out runs in the fifth, when Kenny Bryant pounded a two-run bomb to right center, giving the Blue Hose their three-run lead back, 6-3.
In the sixth inning,
Phil Bondi tied the game with a two-out, three-run double. The rally started with two outs on a single by Mollenhauer. He was followed by a single from Costello and a walk to Gardiner to load the bases. Bondi, a defensive replacement in the top half of the inning, hit a drive off the wall in left field to empty the bases and tie the game at 6-6.
Zebedis struck again with yet another two-run homer in the seventh, just clearing the wall in right field with two outs to put the Blue Hose up 8-6.
In the ninth the Highlanders scored three runs to overcome Presbyterian. Mack and
Cory Turner led the inning off with back-to-back singles. Sipe doubled to bring home Mack with one out. After the Blue Hose intentionally walked
Patrick Marshall to load the bases for a force out, Mollenhauer tied the game with a sacrifice fly. On the next play, Costello drove home the winning run with a double to the wall in left center, sending the Highlanders to their second walk-off win of the season.
Abram Williams posted an inning of scoreless relief in the ninth for the Highlanders, earning the win (2-3).

Radford takes a five-day break, then resumes Big South action with a series at Gardner-Webb, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
