BOX SCORE RADFORD, Va. – Hard rain and lightning stopped the game in the top of the sixth inning, as Radford and James Madison tied a non-conference matchup, 3-3 on Tuesday night.
The tie is the second this season for JMU (15-29-2) and the first since 1991 for Radford (26-20-1) – the Highlanders tied four games that season. With no available dates to resume the game, it was ruled complete after five full innings.
Both teams had four hits when the game concluded. Radford's
Brett Mollenhauer had a first-inning single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
JMU got on the board twice in the top of first inning, capitalizing on a pair of Radford errors. Chad Carroll knocked home Johnny Bladel from third on an error at short to put the Dukes on the board, then Colby Roberts, who reached on an error, scored from third on a ground out to the right side by Casey Goss.
Radford came right back to score three runs in the bottom of the first. With two on and none out,
Zach Costello singled to left field to bring in
Josh Gardiner. On the next play, an errant throw on a potential double play ball allowed Mollenhauer to score from second and tie the game at 2-2. The Highlanders took the lead when
Patrick Marshall's fielder's choice groundout scored Costello.
The Dukes tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth when Cole McIntuff, who hit a leadoff single, scored on a ground out to the right side by Aaron Hoover.
Keith Fritz started and went three innings for the Highlanders in a staff effort – Fritz didn't allow an earned run and struck out three.
JMU used four pitchers in the game – Josh Futter entered in the fourth and went two scoreless frames.
Radford is back home for a 6 p.m. first pitch with East Tennessee State on Wednesday.
