HIGHLANDERS BLANK CAMPBELL FOR FIRST LEAGUE WIN

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. – Three different Highlanders scored and junior Che' Brown made five saves as Radford women's soccer blanked Campbell, 3-0, in Big South Conference action on Saturday afternoon from Cupp Memorial Stadium.

Junior Sahar Aflaki, freshman Kim Harkins' and senior Megan Rhodes found the back of the net for the Highlanders (5-2-1, 1-0-1 Big South) and Brown recorded her third shutout of the season as Radford is undefeated (4-0-1) in its last five contests.

The victory, which gave Radford a four-point Big South-opening weekend, also snapped the Camels' (6-2-1, 1-1-0) four-match winning streak.

Ryann Torrero, who was pressured all match by the Highlanders, made eight saves for the Camels.

Set up by a long accurate punt by Brown, Aflaki put the Highlanders on the board in the 13th minute. Following the punt, junior Julie Ruh'e gathered it, sent a perfect ball to Aflaki, who dribbled around the keeper and finished easily for her first strike of the season.

Right before the half, Harkins extended Radford's lead to 2-0 on a shot from 25 yards out with 1:15 left on the clock. Torrero  misplayed the short hop and it rolled over her and across the line for Harkins' second goal of the season.

After a couple of early scoring attempts by Ruh'e to start the second half, Campbell had its best chance to get on the board in the 56th minute. Following the Camels' first corner kick of the match, Michelle Procaccini settled the service on the far side of the box and rung a hard shot of the crossbar and out of play.

Rhodes put the match away with her second score of 2012 with just under five minutes to play. She headed home Mary Wiley's hard service after Wiley's initial corner kick was cleared right back to her.

The Highlanders outshot the Camels, 21-14 and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Ruh'e charted a match-best five shots, while Campbell's Procaccini recorded four.

Radford hits the road for its next two conference matches taking on Presbyterian (7:00) and UNC Asheville (2:00) on Sept. 27 and 29. Campbell remains on the road next Thursday for a match at Gardner-Webb at 7:00 p.m.
