HIGHLANDERS DROP HARD-FOUGHT DECISION TO NATIONALLY-RANKED CHANTICLEERS

BOX SCORE |

CONWAY, S.C. - The Radford men's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision Sunday at No. 6 Coastal Carolina. Despite not allowing multiple goals for the eighth straight game, the Highlanders fell to 4-5-3 on the season and 1-2-1 in Big South action.

Coastal Carolina's Ricky Garbonzo scored the game's only goal in the 31st minute to give the Chanticleers (11-2-0, 6-0-0) the lead off an assist from Pedro Ribeiro.

"We had a solid effort against what is obviously an excellent Coastal team," RU head coach Marc Reeves said. "But if you want to get any type of result against a high-level ranked opponent, you need to get everything right."

Dane Wilson tied his career high with seven saves in net for the Highlanders, who now have dropped four of the five games in the loss column this season by 1-0 scores.

Offensively, the Highlanders got shots on goal from Bernardo Ulmo, Jamie Summers, and Sergio Arzubiaga and logged 10 shots in all. Coastal tallied 18 shots in all with eight on frame.

"We certainly held our own and I was pleased with our preparation and effort the majority of the time today," Reeves said. "We must show more consistency and cohesion as a group to have this type of fight every game."

With the win, CCU ties the all-time series with Radford, 20-20-7 and has now defeated the Highlanders in three straight seasons. The win was also the 25th straight regular season win for CCU.

Radford returns home for an important conference matchup with High Point this Wednesday, October 23 at 6:00 p.m. inside Cupp Stadium.

"We have a quick turnaround for a very good High Point team and hope we can attract a good crowd for what will be a huge game in our season."
