IMPRESSIVE BIG SOUTH UNBEATEN STREAK SNAPPED BY COASTAL, 1-0

Radford went 20-0-5 against Big South opponents over last 25 matchups, winning the last 12

BOX SCORE |

CONWAY, S.C. – Radford women's soccer had its eight-game winning streak snapped by Coastal Carolina, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon. Sam Patterson's goal for the Chanticleers ( 9-7-1, 6-3-0 Big South) in the 15th minute was the difference as the Highlanders (12-2-1, 8-1-0) dropped their first league contest of the season, but still remained in sole possession of first place, following Campbell's 1-0 victory at second-place Longwood.

Even more impressive was that Radford, until today, had not dropped a contest to a league opponent in 25 matches which dated back to a 1-0 loss at Campbell in the 2011 regular season finale. The Highlanders went 20-0-5, winning the last 12, during a stretch that started with the 2011 Big South quarterfinals and spanned all the way to Radford's, 2-1 comeback win at High Point last Saturday.

"It hurts to end a 25-game unbeaten streak, but I thought we played well for the last 60 minutes, creating several good scoring chances" said head coach Ben Sohrabi.

Patterson's game-winner came when she took a centering feed from Fia Jonsson on the run and rifled a one-timer into the left side of the net. That score would hold up the rest of the match as Radford had its chances over the final 60 minutes, but could not find the equalizer.

Coastal keeper Megan Spencer made six saves to earn the first shutout against the Highlanders this season. Her counterpart, senior Che' Brown also made six saves in net for Radford. Both keepers made three saves in each half.

Radford held a 19-14 advantage in shots, including 10-6 in the first half. Senior Julie Ruh'e paced the Highlanders with a game-high six shots, three on goal.

In the first half, senior Rachel Conway sent a high shot from 30 yards out that was lost in the sun by Spencer and hit the underside of the crossbar, but bounced safely back to a surprised Spencer. With under five minutes remaining, junior Kara Wade made a nice crossover inside the box and found her self alone with Spencer, but she her left foot attempt from 10 yards was stopped.

"We look forward to senior day and trying to get the highest seed possible for the Big South Tournament," stated Sohrabi.

Radford looks to bounce back on Saturday, Oct. 26 against second-place Winthrop at 2:00 p.m. The Highlanders will celebrate senior day prior to the match, recognizing the nine young ladies that make up this year's class.
