RADFORD DOMINATES KEYDETS IN SHUTOUT, 3-0

BOX SCORE |

RADFORD, Va. - Radford's offense exploded for 31 shots and three goals for the second consecutive game Wednesday, while the defense held VMI to just six shots in a 3-0 Big South victory at Cupp Stadium.

The Highlanders scored the only goal they would need in the 13th minute when Luis Grande broke into the open and put a solid shot on goal. VMI's Daniel Kitchen made the save, but left the rebound wide open, and Bernardo Ulmo knocked home his seventh goal of the season. The assist was Grande's team-leading sixth of the season.

Ulmo would hand out an assist three minutes later when his direct kick from 40 yards found to the head of Jamie Summers. Summers nodded in his third strike of the season, and Radford found itself in complete control just 16 minutes into the game.

"We had a good, professional performance tonight," RU head coach Marc Reeves said. "With the number of shots we were able to create a lot of good goal chances. All three of our goals tonight were good goals."

The Highlanders outshot the Keydets 17-3 in the first half and 31-6 overall. Dane Wilson needed to make just two saves in recording his fourth shutout of the season.

"We need to be better in taking chances in tight games, but this was a good outing," Reeves said.

Grande finished the scoring with a tally in the 88th minute. After Stephen Hudgens forced a turnover at midfield, he found Grande streaking to the goal, and the senior delivered with a right-footed fake to bring Kitchen out of position and then switched to the left to find the net. It was his first goal of the season.

The Highlanders improve to 6-5-4 overall and 3-2-2 in the Big South, plus record three vital points in the league standings. RU travels Saturday to Winthrop for a 6:00 p.m. start in Rock Hill, S.C.

"We have a short turnaround for a talented, spirited, and well-coached Winthrop team this weekend," Reeves said. "We need to be read to play."
