BATTLE OF UNBEATENS IN MEN'S SOCCER WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT CUPP

RADFORD, Va. - Radford hosts Longwood in a battle betweens teams yet to be defeated in Big South Conference play Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. inside Cupp Stadium. The Highlanders won their league opener Saturday, 2-1 over Gardner-Webb in overtime. The Lancers are 1-0-1 in conference play.

THE SERIES: In a rivalry that dates back to RU's inaugural men's soccer season of 1984, the Highlanders and the Lancers have faced off 21 times prior to Wednesday's match. Radford holds an 11-7-3 advantage in the series. RU won last year's matchup, a 3-0 decision in Farmville.


THE LAST TIME OUT: Joe Mayer scored a game-winning goal with 1:43 remaining in the first overtime period at Cupp Stadium on Saturday night to lead Radford to a 2-1 victory over Gardner-Webb in the Big South opener for the Highlanders.

The goal, Mayer's team-leading sixth this year, was his third game-winner on the season. Radford is now 5-0-1 in its last six conference openers and 4-0 under head coach Marc Reeves.

Bernardo Ulmo gave the Highlanders the lead in the 55th minute scoring his third goal of the season.


THE LANCERS: Longwood defeated UNC Asheville 3-1 on Saturday to move to 2-4-3 overall and remain unbeaten (1-0-1) in Big South play. LU tied High Point (2-2) in its conference opener.

The Lancers are led by the defensive efforts of freshman goalkeeper, Carlos Canas, who has recorded 31 saves in nine games.

THE HIGHLANDERS: Defense - Radford's back line defensive unit and goalkeeper, Dane Wilson, continue to put up impressive numbers this season. The Highlanders have given up just three goals in their last five games (3-1-1). Wilson owns a 1.26 goals against average and is tied for third in the Big South with two shutouts on the season.

Offense: Mayer leads the Big South with three game-winning goals. He ranks 25th in the country with 0.67 goals per game. His 14 points on the season has him tied for third in the league. As a team, the Highlanders rank fourth in the Big South at 1.44 goals per contest.
