WINTHROP SLIPS PAST MEN'S SOCCER, 1-0

BOX SCORE ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop's Max Hasenstab scored the lone goal of the night Saturday at Eagle Field in a 1-0 win over Radford. The loss put an end to RU's season-long three-game unbeaten streak and was the fourth straight loss by a score of 1-0 on the season for the Highlanders.

Radford (6-6-4, 3-3-2) created nine shots in each period and outshot the Eagles 18-12 for the game. The Highlanders nearly took the lead twice on back-to-back plays in the 19th minute. Bismark Amofah's drive hit the crossbar followed by a Bernardo Ulmo shot that needed cleared off the line by the Winthrop defense.

"Winthrop is one of the top teams in our league and has some exceptionally talented players," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "It was a tough and tight game that hinged on a couple of big moments. We hit the bar and had one saved off the line that could have seen us take the lead."

RU put more shots on goal in the game as well. The Highlanders held an 8-6 advantage in shots on frame, but Eagle goalie Guilherme Avelar saved all eight. Radford keeper Dane Wilson recorded five saves.

"We pushed hard toward the end of the game," Reeves said. "But they are a tough group that made some big blocks and plays to keep us from scoring."

Radford travels to Liberty for a 5:00 p.m. start Wednesday, November 6.

"We need to bounce back quickly to face a strong Liberty team and with just two games left, we need points to secure a tournament berth," Reeves said.
