ULMO'S GOLDEN GOAL EARNS MEN'S SOCCER A TOURNAMENT BERTH

BOX SCORE |

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Radford earned a berth into next week's Big South Men's Soccer Tournament in dramatic fashion Wednesday with a 2-1 overtime victory at Liberty. Bernardo Ulmo converted the game-winner after Luis Grande forced a turnover and found the RU striker inside the box for the finish.

After a scoreless first half, Daniel O'Keefe gave the Highlanders the lead in the 72nd minute with his first goal of the season. O'Keefe's header off a Sergio Arzubiaga corner kick found the back of the net to give RU the 1-0 lead.

The Flames, forced overtime with a late strike in the 86th minute, but Ulmo's game-winner came just 1:34 into the extra session.

Liberty outshot the Highlanders 12-11 and 7-6 in shots on goal. Each goalkeeper recorded five saves on the night. It was Radford, however, that held a 10-6 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Dane Wilson earned the victory in net for RU and was helped by one team save. Jeremy Lee suffered the loss for the Flames.

"I am very proud of our group's resilience as we continue to be dealt some tough situations," RU head coach Marc Reeves said. "We played pretty well the majority of the game against a very talented Liberty team, and to find a way to get all three points after conceding late was fantastic."

Radford finishes the regular season at Cupp Stadium on Saturday hosting UNC Asheville on Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m., and the Highlanders will honor seniors Wilson, Ulmo, James Jordan, Vittorio Lauretano, Joe Mayer, Grande, and Matt Janssen.

"Our seniors have stuck with it all season, and we look forward to honoring them this Saturday. The best way to do that would be three points against a tough, talented, and well coached Asheville team," Reeves said. "The league table will see some more movement after this weekend's games, and we obviously want to finish as high up as possible."
