HIGHLANDERS SWEEP TWIN BILL TO OPEN KENNESAW SERIES

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 KENNESAW, Ga. - Radford won its third and fourth consecutive games Saturday sweeping a doubleheader at Kennesaw State, 5-3 in game one, and 4-2 in the nightcap. The Highlanders move to 4-1 on the season and handed KSU its first two losses.

GAME ONE - Radford won its third straight game and moved to 3-1 on the season with a 5-3 victory in the opener of a three-game set at Kennesaw State. The game was rained out Friday and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Tyler Costello (1-0) worked 6.0 innings in his second start of the season and gave up two run, both unearned. He walked one and struck out three in earning the victory on the mound.

Jeff Kemp gave the Highlanders an early lead with a solo home run in the first. It was his second long ball of the season. The preseason Big South Co-Player of the Year finished 3-4 with a pair of runs batted in and the homer.

Kennesaw bounced back in the bottom of the first capitalizing on a two-out error by Hunter Higgerson with a two-run double that gave the Owls a 2-1 lead.

Radford tied the game in the third on a double by Josh Gardiner that plated Josh Reavis, and then took the lead when Kemp singled home Gardiner.

The Highlanders added an unearned insurance run when Kemp's grounder to second base was mishandled with two outs, and RU ran across another run to lead 4-2.

That insurance proved important in the eighth when Kennesaw's Chris McGowan homered to right center.

With a 4-3 lead heading into the ninth, the Highlanders again built on their lead. Blake Sipe squeezed home Chris Coia to give Radford its final margin of victory, 5-3.

Michael Costello closed the door on the mound, earning his second save of the season.

GAME TWO - The Highlanders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Gardiner singled and scored on a passed ball. Alexander Lee drove in a run on a ground out, and Higgerson singled home a run to give Radford a lead it would not relinquish.

Kemp's second home run of the day gave the Highlanders a 4-0 lead in the third inning.

Michael Boyle (1-0) struck out six Owls in 5.2 innings to earn the victory. Jeff Maxwell worked 2.1 and gave up just one run setting up Michael Costello for his second save of the day.

The final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
