SOFTBALL SPOTLIGHT: STEPHANIE DAMERON

The 2013 season has kicked off and with that we will continue to feature all 17 Highlanders in a question and answer session.

Junior pitcher Stephanie Dameron hails from Dameron, Md. and is wearing No. 24 during her third season with the Highlanders.

An all-conference selection as a freshman, Dameron has posted a 22-6 record with a 2.13 ERA over her first two seasons with the Highlanders. During her rookie campaign, she was 16-6 with a 1.89 ERA (freshman record) and ranked second in the NCAA in fewest walks per seven innings (0.64), logging a team-high 152 innings. A season later, Dameron came out of the bullpen the majority of the season and was a perfect 6-0. An education major, she is the oldest of seven children and lives in the town that is named after her family.

Radford heads down to Athens, Ga. to take part in the Bulldog Invitational this weekend. The Highlanders will face Indiana State, North Dakota State and host and 23rd-ranked Georgia.

What is your most memorable softball memory?
My freshman year at Georgia Southern we had just won against the Eagles and I was given the game ball for my first collegiate win. I came out of the dugout and gave the ball to my dad who had completely surprised me in Georgia. It was one of those moments where all the hard work, long hours in the backyard, and me accidently hitting my dad in the ankles numerous times, were represented in that one softball. Something I'll never forget!

Who is the most influential person in your life and why?

My parents, they have always been so supportive in my decisions, offering advice, and listening when I just need to talk.

Is there any significance to the jersey number you wear?
I've always worn #4, but my freshman year Hannah Ojeda had #4, and Chelsea Kelley had #44, so I figured #24 was the next best thing. However, when I chose #24, coach Dean told me about Sarah Himan, who had previously worn the jersey, how I had such big shoes to fill, and the hard work and dedication she put into the RUSB program. Hearing my teammates who played with Sarah talk about her makes me proud to wear this jersey, not just the name on the front, but the number on the back.

What is your first softball memory?
Learning how to pitch in the driveway with my dad when I was 10. It was wet, rainy, and he had used up all the availability of his Little League pitchers during Districts, and he wanted to teach me to pitch so badly, so he taught me some basics he had learned from observing other pitchers…he thought it was so easy…I thought it was so hard. Nonetheless, this sparked my interest in learning how to pitch and I'm so grateful!

What is your major (or would like to major in) and why did you choose it?
Secondary education with a concentration in english and history. Coming from home school to high school, I had some really influential teachers whom were great role models and they inspired me to help others through teaching.

With a long winter break, what did you do (softball and non-softball related) during that time?
I had surgery on my right leg, so I spent my days on the sofa watching Lost and going to therapy. I spent time with my siblings and family. When I was able to drive, I visited my pitching coach at home and helped him with other pitchers as best as I could. I watched the Baltimore Ravens fight through the playoffs…oh and I stripped wire!
