HIGHLANDERS EARN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT AND SERIES VICTORY OVER VMI

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 RADFORD, Va. - Radford split a doubleheader Saturday with VMI taking game one in extra innings 4-3, but dropping the final game of the series, 10-4, in the nightcap. The two teams will not play a game on Sunday as originally scheduled. The Highlanders earn the series victory on opening weekend of Big South play after RU won the opener on Friday night, 8-4.

Game 1 - Alexander Lee's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning plate Jeff Kemp with the game-winning run, and the Highlanders defeated VMI, 4-3.

Kemp led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and moved to third on a sac bunt by Shane Johnsonbaugh to set up Lee's deep fly ball for the win.

Radford came from behind for the second straight game to defeat the Keydets. Brandon Angus gave VMI a 2-0 lead in the second inning when he sent a Michael Boyle offering over the right field fence. The Highlaners answered with three runs in the third to take a one-run lead.

Kemp's first double of the day set up the big inning for RU as he plated the first run for the Highlanders with a line shot down the right field line. Josh Reavis tied the game scoring on a wild pitch, and Kemp scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Zach Woolcock.

The Keydets answered in the seventh with an RBI double by Matt Winn. The game remained tied until the bottom of the 10th. Blake Sipe made a spectacular catch in right field for the Highlanders to save three runs with the bases loaded and keep the game tied.

Daniel Bridgeman earned the victory in relief for the Highlanders. He worked 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out five. Reed Garrett took the loss for VMI.

Game 2 - Despite Kemp's three-run home run in the first inning, which gave Radford a 3-1 lead, VMI avoided the sweep with a 13-hit performance and a 10-4 victory.

The Keydets broke open a tied game at 3-3 in the third with five runs. The big blow came from Berkely Hawkins, who drove in a pair of runs with a double into the right field corner. Will Connerly, Thomas Stallings, and Jordan Tarsovich also knocked in runs for the Keydets in the inning.

Jeremy Brown went 6.0 innings and struck out nine without a walk to earn the victory. Taylor Edens notched a save with a 3.0 appearance in relief. Keith Fritz gave up eight runs for the Highlanders in the loss, but only three were earned runs.

Connerly and Drew Bryan each collected three hits for VMI. Josh Gardiner had three singles for RU, and Blake Sipe and Kemp each had a pair of base hits.

Radford moves to 10-8, 2-1 on the season. VMI is now 7-14, 1-2.
