BOX SCORE 2 CLEARWATER, Fla. – Radford finished off the day with a 7-5 eight-inning win over Cornell to earn a split on day two of the City of Clearwater Invitational. The Highlanders dropped the day's opener 4-3 to Boston College on a walk-off home run.
Radford 7, Cornell 5 (8)
In a contest that featured 28 hits, Radford scored two runs in the top of the eighth and survived a bases loaded scare in the bottom half to escape with a 7-5 win over Cornell to earn a split on day two of the City of Clearwater Invitational.
With one out in the eighth, senior
Jessica Agee laced a RBI single through the left side helping Radford regain the lead. They would add an insurance run on a bases loaded hit by pitch.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Big Red loaded the bases, but a foul out and a ground out ended the threat and secured the win. Cornell would strand 14 runners on the day, while Radford left eight on base.
All nine starters recorded hits for the Highlanders, who churned out 13. It was their third 13-plus hit showing of the tournament. The offense was led by freshman
Nia Chiles' 3-for-4 performance, the first multi-hit game of her collegiate career. Freshman
Whitney Davis and senior
Morgan Eye each registered two hits. Davis recorded a double, while Eye scored two runs and made two Sportscenter Top-10 worthy catches in right.
Of Cornell's 15 hits (13 singles), the majority of them were bloops or slow choppers that found an empty spot on the field.
Cornell pushed across two unearned runs in the second as back-to-back bases loaded grounders. The first was booted and the second was a slow chopper up the middle with the only play to second.
Radford put up a five-spot in third to grab a 5-2 lead. The Highlanders posted five hits in the frame, highlighted by freshman
Emily Naegele's two-run opposite field blast to right and freshman
Casey Burns' two-run double.
The Big Red continued to struggle as Radford made big defensive plays to end several scoring threats. Two of those were by Eye, who ran and dove through the rightfield fence to rob Michiko McGivney of a leadoff home run in the fourth. The following inning, she took a sure RBI double away from Christina Villalon with a full extension diving grab in the rightcenterfield gap.
However, the Big Red would finally come through in the sixth as two bloopers, two choppers and a sacrifice fly evened the score at 5-5.
Senior
Jackie Jenkins grinded out the complete game win. She allowed three earned runs and walked (intentional) one on the day.
Boston College 4, Radford 3
Tory Speer's walk-off solo home run to start the seventh inning gave Boston College a 4-3 win over Radford in the Highlanders first game on day two of the City of Clearwater Invitational.
The Highlanders had just tied the game with two outs on a wild pitch only to see the Eagles walk off with the victory.
Freshman
Racheal Walters gave Radford an efficient start. She allowed an earned run, struck out four and walked one. She scattered 10 hits, and got out of several situation as BC stranded nine runners. However, she was victimized by an error that led to three unearned runs in the fourth.
Chelsea Dimon picked up the win for Boston College, allowing two earned runs on four hits. She struck out two, walked three and committed four wild pitches, two of which allowed Radford to score.
The Highlanders got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the third. Freshman
Becky Mantel reached on an error to start the inning. She moved to second on a sac, third on a flyout to right and scored on a wild pitch.
A RBI double by Davis pushed Radford's lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth.
However, BC took advantage of a dropped fly ball to start the bottom of the frame to plate two-out unearned runs. After the error, a triple to center put the Eagles on the board. Two quick outs followed, but a RBI single evened the score and a liner down the leftfield line put BC ahead, 3-2.
The Highlanders forced the bottom of the seventh when Mantel scooted home on a wild pitch for the second time in the contest. It could have been more, but Radford was unable to take advantage of a second and third no out situation.
