VIDEO RECAP: COSTELLO, MEISINGER COMBINE FOR SHUTOUT IN SERIES OPENER VS. MARSHALL

BOX SCORE RADFORD, Va. - Tyler Costello threw 8.0 innings of three-hit baseball, and Ryan Meisinger worked a perfect ninth as Radford collected its first shutout of the season in a 5-0 win over Marshall to open a weekend series at RU Baseball Field.

The Highlander pitching ace moved to 3-2 on the season in his best outing of the season lowering his ERA to 3.55 in the process. Meisinger needed just 11 pitches to retire three batters in the final inning in a non-save appearance.

Josh Gardiner led the Highlander offense with a 2-4 afternoon and a run scored. Six other RU players notched base hits. Jeff Kemp, who was 0-2 with a pair of walks, saw his seven-game hitting streak come to an end.

Radford (11-9) broke open a scoreless game in the fourth with three runs. Zach Woolcock led off the inning with a double into the right field corner, and Alexander Lee followed with a single that moved Woolcock to third.  He would score the game's first run on a balk called on Marshall starter Chase Boster (1-3), who took the loss.

The second run came across on a squeeze bunt by Chris Coia, which plated Lee. The final run of the inning scored when Hunter Higgerson, who had reached on an infield single, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by Marshall catcher, Matt Kirkwood.

The Hlghlanders added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Gardiner and Josh Reavis led off with singles, and Gardiner plated when Kemp grounded into a double play. Patrick Marshall's pinch hit ground ball that turned into an error by second baseman Aaron Bossi scored Ryan Burgess, who had reached on an error.  In all, Marshall committed five errors on the day.

Boster took the loss after going 5.0 innings and giving up three runs, two earned. Costello threw 111 pitches in the victory as he walked two and struck out two.

The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1:00 at RU Baseball Stadium.
