SOFTBALL HEADS TO COLLEGE PARK FOR MIKEN MARYLAND INVITATIONAL

Radford heads to College Park, Md. this weekend for a very competitive Miken Maryland Invitational. The Highlanders, looking to rebound from last weekend's Bulldog Invitational, will play five games from March 8-10, against host Maryland, St. John's, Ohio State, Binghamton and Iowa.

LAST TIME OUT: Radford went 1-5 last weekend at the Bulldog Invitational with three of those defeats coming at the hands of the then-23rd ranked Georgia Bulldogs…. The Highlanders did pick up a come-from-behind victory, 3-2, over Indiana State, courtesy of a two-out two-run home run by Jessie Hutchens in the top of the seventh then a game-ending diving catch with the bases loaded by Morgan Eye.
 
RU TIDBITS: Freshman Casey Burns had the hottest bat last weekend, batting .438 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored… The weekend included 4-for-5 effort in a 9-8 loss to the Sycamores… Freshman Whitney Davis hit her first collegiate home run and freshman Nia Chiles recorded her first career hit against the Sycamores… The Highlanders churned out a season-high 14 hits, including six extra base hits (five doubles), in that game.

THE RED STORM: St. John's (3-12-1) dropped all four contests at the Easton Classic (University of Alabama) and have lost six straight… Jackie Reed and Erin Burner are batting .375 and .367, respectively… Each has recorded a team-high 18 hits with Reed recording seven doubles and Burner, four home runs and 14 RBI… Tori Free posts a team-best 3.29 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 51 innings… Radford is 2-2 against St. John's, taking the last meeting, 6-3, a 2009 matchup in Hawai'i… Head coach Amy Kvilhaug was Radford's skipper from 2003-06 and current RU skipper Maggie Johnson was Kvilhaug's assistant for the latter three seasons.
 
THE TERRAPINS: Host Maryland (4-11) is coming of a mid-week home loss to Seton Hall, 6-2 and have dropped five straight… Three Terrapins are batting above .300 led by Juli Strange at .333… She has a team best 11 runs scored and three doubles… Nikki Maier has registered a team-high four home runs, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored… Kaitlyn Schmeiser has logged 46 innings with a 4.57 ERA and 27 strikeouts… RU is 2-3 all-time against Maryland with the Highlanders winning the last meeting, 3-1, in 2005 (Athens, Ga.).
 
THE BUCKEYES: Ohio State (9-6) returns to action since going 2-3 at the Mary Nutter Classic (Feb. 22-24) defeating then-No. 14 Arizona, 6-0 and Cal Poly, 12-1… The Buckeyes bat .289 as a team, led by Taylor Watkins at .411 with a team-best three long balls, 13 RBI and 13 runs scored… Three other Buckeyes bat above .300… OSU has used five pitchers, four with 18-plus innings of work.. Alex DiDomenico is 4-1 with a miniscule 0.78 ERA, 27 strikeouts and two shutouts in 36 innings… This will be the first meeting between the schools.
 
THE BEARCATS: Binghamton (2-7) is coming off a 1-4 showing at the Ilson-DeMarinin Invitational (Arizona State)… The Bearcats picked up an 8-5 win over North Dakota State… Sydney Harbaugh bats a team-best .333 with three RBI and four runs scored… Mikala King has knocked in six runs and Tiffany McIntosh has recorded three doubles, two home runs and five RBI... Kate Price is 1-3 with a 3.74 ERA in 21.2 innings, while Demi Laney is 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA and team-best 25 strikeouts in 27 innings… The Highlanders are 3-0 against the Bearcats, defeating them twice last season during the Highlander Invitational.
 
THE HAWKEYES: Iowa (14-5) is the hottest team coming into the tournament having won five straight, including a perfect 4-0 showing at the Easton Invitational (Cal State Fullerton)… It included victories over then-No. 15 Stanford and then No. 24 Oregon State… Megan Blank (.379), Kayla Massey (.373) and Johnnie Dowling (.338) lead the Hawkeyes at the plate… Blank (22 RBI, 12 runs) and Massey (13 RBI) have each hit four home runs, wile Dowling has recorded a team-best 15 runs and six stolen bases… Radford is 0-1 versus Iowa, dropping the only meeting, 5-4, in 2008 at Arizona State.

UP NEXT: Radford will take part in the USF Under Armour Invitational next weekend. The Highlanders will face Quinnipiac, LIU-Brooklyn, Boston College, Cornell and Rhode Island from March 15-17.
