SOFTBALL SHUT OUT IN DOUBLEHEADER AT GARDNER-WEBB

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Radford was shut out in a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb on Friday afternoon from Varsity Field. Despite a 4-for-6 effort by freshman Megan Honaker (Damascus, Va./Holston), the Runnin' Bulldogs (13-28, 8-15 Big South) blanked the Highlanders (16-32, 9-11), 1-0 and 5-0.

In a pitcher dual between freshman Rachel Walters (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and Gardner-Webb's Ashley Rhyne, the Runnin' Bulldogs came out on top, 1-0 in game one. Honaker's career-best 3-for-3 effort was wasted as the rest of the lineup went 2-for-18, including zero hits from the top six batters.

The contest saw a lot of stranded runners (17). GWU's Taylar Pridgen recorded on the only hit with runners in scoring position, recording the game-winning single by Taylar Pridgen in the fourth.

Rhyne surrendered five hits, struck out four and walked three. Walters scattered seven hits, struck out eight and walked one.

In the fourth, Gardner-Webb pushed across the lone run of the game when Pridgen dropped a one-out RBI single into leftfield, scoring Jill Blank, who reached on a one-out infield single. After Jordyn Arrowood was hit, a wild pitch moved them into scoring position setting up Pridgen.

Pridgen (2-3), Blank (2-2) and Samantha Meenaghan (2-4) combined for six of GWU's seven hits.

Senior Ryndee Ruch (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and sophomore Hilari Hopkins (Cottondale, Fla./Gulf Coast State) picked up RU's other two hits.

Jess Childers tossed a two-hit complete game shutout as Gardner-Webb completed the sweep with a 5-0 victory in the nightcap. She held the Highlanders hitless after Honaker and freshman Becky Mantel (Riverside, Ill./Riverside Brookfied) opened the game with back-to-back hits. The only runner reached the rest of the contest was via a sixth-inning error.

The Runnin' Bulldogs recorded 12 hits in game two led by Meenaghan going 4-for-4 with three runs scored.

After Radford stranded another runner in scoring position to start game two, Gardner-Webb's Savannah Burns bounced one back up the middle for a two-out RBI single and a 1-0 lead in the first.

The Runnin' Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-0 in the third, highlighted by a two-run double by Morgan Baker. They added an unearned run in the sixth.

The teams will close out the series tomorrow at 12:00. The contest was originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
