CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Radford faced No. 25 Virginia in a preseason exhibition at Klockner Stadium on Tuesday and fell 2-0 to the Cavaliers in a defensive battle that saw the Highlanders go toe-to-toe with a nationally-ranked opponent.
The Highlanders and Cavaliers battled to a scoreless tie for the first 67 minutes, including 61 shutout minutes for RU from starting goalkeeper, Dane Wilson. Wilson recorded three saves and recorded a no-decision.
"UVA is a very talented, deep, and well coach team who I have no doubts will have a successful season, so this was a great preseason game for us," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said following the contest.
"We got to look at a number of players in multiple spots with many guys getting their first college soccer experience. The most important aspect is we learn and improve as a team and then as we get a few guys back healthy, our competition and depth within the group will increase even more. We have plenty to work on in the remaining days of preseason and leading in to a very tough opening weekend."
Sam Legg came on in goal in relief of Wilson surrendering the two scores that decided the contest. Virginia's Riggs Lennon captialized on a mishandle by Legg to post the first score of the night in the 67th minute. The Cavaliers added an insurance goal on a corner kick set play in the 85th minute for the final tally.
The Highlanders open their home season Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. in Cupp Stadium vs. Virginia Tech in the final exhibition game of the preseason.
