UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Radford goalkeeper Dane Wilson, along with his defense teammates, kept Penn State scoreless for 69 minutes, but the Nittany Lions were able to notch the only score of Friday's season-opener for both teams. Radford fell 1-0 to the defending Big Ten champions.
The Highlanders out-shot the hosts 5-3 in attempts that arrived on frame, but PSU keeper Andrew Wolverton turned away all five shots on goal and eight shots in all to record the shutout.
RU head coach Marc Reeves talked afterwards about the tough loss for his Highlanders.
"A tough and talented opening opponent that we battled all the way. We had enough chances to get a goal, but lacked some quality at key moments. We defended fairly solidly as a team, but one lapse of concentration cost us."
Penn State scored the game's lone goal with 21:10 remaining on an 18-yard strike from Mark Wadid.
Radford's offense produced five shots on goal by five different players, but could not break through to find the back of the net.
"We face another very tough game on Monday and as we continue to get guys back healthy and in game shape, hopefully we can increase our depth and drive to win," Reeves said.
The Highlanders remain on the road Monday at West Virginia for a Labor Day matinee at 2:30 p.m.
