HIGHLANDERS TOP ODU IN OT ON GOLDEN'S GOLDEN GOAL

Golden's First Collegiate Goal Gives Program First Road Win In Series

BOX SCORE

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Sydney Golden's first collegiate goal came at the most opportune time. The defender's golden goal just 1:44 into overtime gave Radford women's soccer a hard fought 1-0 road win at Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon from the ODU Soccer Complex.

The victory, the first on the road against the Monarchs in program history, also extended the Highlanders' (2-0-1) impressive regular season undefeated streak to 17 matches (12-0-5), a streak that started on Aug. 31, 2012 against these same Monarchs. It also marks the first time Radford has defeated ODU in back-to-back seasons.

"ODU is never an easy place to play, but our team came over here with something to prove and this win took a lot of heart," said Golden. "I'm so proud of my teammates. It was really a team win."

Golden's strike came on the first and only shot of extra time as she blasted a 38-yard free kick into the top left corner of the net. It came after Radford survived a second half in which Old Dominion held a wide margin advantages in both shots (9-3) and corner kicks (8-1).

"We grinded out a tough win on the road," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "Being used to practicing in lower temperatures (no higher than 75 degrees) much of the preseason, the conditions (90 degrees, high humidity) today took a lot out of us. We played a lot of players to pull off a good team win."

Senior Che' Brown notched three saves, two in the second half, for her first shutout of the season and the 28th clean sheet of her career. Radford's defensive unit has now recorded 37 shutouts since the start of the 2010 season.

ODU out shot Radford, 13-8 and recorded a 10-7 margin in corner kicks. Senior Sahar Aflaki led the Highlanders with two shots. Monarch keeper matched her counterpart Brown with three saves.

Radford returns home on Friday, Sept. 6 hosting Delaware State at 7:00 p.m.
