HIGHLANDERS RALLY FOR 2-2 DRAW WITH CAMELS

RADFORD Va. – First collegiate goals from junior Shannon Nasca and senior Caitlin Annear erased a 2-0 halftime deficit and sophomore Sydney Chervenic kept Campbell off the board for the final 65 minutes as Radford earned a 2-2 draw with the Camels (2-5-3, 0-1-2 Big South) in league action on Wednesday evening at Cupp Stadium.

Early second half goals, coming on the Highlanders' (5-4-2, 2-0-) first two shots, by Nasca and Annear evened the contest in the first seven minutes. Nasca cut the deficit to 2-1, heading home senior Kara Wade's far post service in the 49th minute.

Less than four minutes later, senior Annear netted the equalizer. Junior Asyia Mitchell set a low feed across the box to an on-coming Annear. She calmly rolled a left-footed shot back across and the ball nestled into the far post.

"I was really impressed on how we handled adversity and scored two nice goals," said head coach Ben Sohrabi.

Both teams had numerous opportunities to tally the winner, but in the end Chervenic, who started the second half, made three saves. Her second-half counterpart, Samantha Lawson, who also came on at the start of the second half, made six saves and was helped out by Shelby Denkert, who cleared a 72nd minute shot by RU's Britney Kendall off the line.

Along with Kendall's chance, RU had three great scoring threats go awry. Late in regulation, freshman Jordan Lundin's point-blank attempt went right into the hands of Lawson. With 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime, a service was misjudged by the Campbell keeper. However, the ball took a funny bounce as Annear was rushing to the goal line. On the ensuing scramble, Mitchell's uncontested attempt whizzed wide.

"I thought in the second half, we played hte best half of soccer this year," continued Sohrabi.

Campbell's best chance came a few minutes before Lundin's when Ashley Clark ripped bender from the left, but Chervenic made a diving stop. The rebound bounced around and was eventually cleared by the Highlanders.

The Highlanders, playing their third straight double overtime affair, ended up outshooting the Camels, 24-15, including 19-9 after the first 45 minutes.

Campbell struck four minutes apart early in the first half to take a 2-0 lead. Nicole Connolly, taking a pass back by Kelly Costello-Mays, put the Camels on the board with an upper 90 strike from 22 yards in the 14th minute. Campbell continued to pressure and earned a corner kick in the 18th minute. The service deflected off a Radford defender's leg and Alexis Prada buried a wide open shot from just outside the 18.

All this action came after Radford controlled play for the first 10-plus minutes but a Jasmine Sampson header 58 seconds into the match went just high and Mitchell's left-footed bender at 1:52 was saved by a diving Alexis Conners. That was Conners lone save of the half, while RU starting keeper Katie McCormick stopped two shots.

Radford concludes its three-game homestand on Saturday, Oct. 4 hosting Longwood at 2:00 p.m.
