Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

LATE GOAL LIFTS WINTHROP PAST RADFORD IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop's Megan David one touched a serve from midfield in the 75th minute and scored the game's only goal as the Eagles (7-8-1, 3-5-1) defeated Radford 1-0 in the regular season finale for the Highlanders (7-9-2, 4-5-1). With the loss, RU will not host a first round game in the Big South Tournament, and will have to wait until Tuesday's final round of games in the league to confirm its final place in the conference standings and probable seeding for the tournament.

"Today's game was a tough one to take," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "We defended tough for the majority of the game. Late we pushed for the equalizer and hit the crossbar to go with other quality chances."

Less than a minute after Winthrop took the lead, Jordan Lundin's drive from 25 yards away hit the top of the crossbar and just missed tying the game. It was Radford's best look at an equalizing goal, but not the only chance. RU put three more shots on goal in the game's final 10 minutes from Hannah Duff, Carley Keer, and Asyia Mitchell, but Amelia Henderson turned away each of them to record the shutout.

"Credit goes to Winthrop today," Sohrabi said. "They were playing for their conference lives and got it done."

WU outshot Radford 13-10 and each goalkeeper made five saves on the afternoon.

Radford will await its fate with the Big South Tournament seedings, which will be finalized on Tuesday night. The Highlanders are not yet assured of a berth into the tournament and could finish as high as sixth in the standings.

TOURNAMENT BERTH SCENARIOS:
  • If any of these three teams (Longwood, UNC Asheville, Winthrop) lose or tie on Tuesday, RU earns a berth into the tournament.
  • If all three lose or tie, then RU is the #6 seed and will play on the road at the #3 seed.
  • If two of the three lose or tie, then RU is the #7 seed and will play on the road at the #2 seed.
  • If one of the three loses or ties, then RU is the #8 seed and will play on the road at the #1 seed.
  • If all three win, then RU finishes in a three-way tie for 7th place, but loses the tie-breaker and does not receive a bid to the tournament.
