ROUND 3
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Conner Hayden finished in red figures for the second-straight day to tie for seventh and lead the Radford men's golf team to an 11th-place showing Tuesday at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic hosted by Charleston Southern at Turtle Point Golf Course (par 72, 7,061 yards).
After making the turn in 1-under-par, Hayden suffered bogeys on holes 13 and 15 to lose ground on the field. However, the Chilhowie, Va., native closed the tournament in impressive fashion by going birdie-birdie over his final two holes to notch his third sub-par round of the season. By tying for seventh place at 215 (74-70-71), the junior recorded his second top-10 of the fall and sixth of his career.
Tanner Carbaugh had momentum early in his final round, logging birdies at the par-5 second and the par-4 third. The senior lost steam on the back nine, however, to close with a 74 and tie for 29th at 223 (73-76-74). Ryan Rettberg tied for 55th at 228 (80-73-75), while Nick Brediger tied for 62nd at 229 (78-74-77). Callum Cochrane rounded out the lineup in a tie for 73rd at 232 (79-72-81).
Winthrop, which entered the tournament ranked 37th in the nation, held off a furious rally by runner-up Georgia Southern to capture the team title by four shots. Winthrop (864) carded a 7-under-par 281 Tuesday, while Georgia Southern (868) fired a 10-under-par 278, which was the best round of the tournament. RU concluded the event with an 890 (304-289-297).
Scott Wolfes of Georgia Southern and Ryan Cornfield of USC Upstate shared medalist honors at 6-under-par 210.
The Highlanders will return to action in a few months when they travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C. for the Wexford Intercollegiate. Francis Marion will host the two-day tournament, Feb. 23-24, at Wexford Plantation.
