ROUNDS 1-2
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Just like last year, the Radford men's golf team played its way to the top of the team leaderboard Monday behind its 6-under-par 562 (283-279) through 36 holes of competition at the Bash at the Beach. Appalachian State is hosting the two-day 54-hole tournament at The Surf Golf and Beach Club (par 71, 6,920 yards).
Â
After opening with a 1-under-par 283 in the morning's first round, the Highlanders knocked four strokes off that figure to return a 5-under-par 279 to the clubhouse in the afternoon. Nationally-ranked USC Upstate holds second place at 1-under-par 567 (282-285).
Â
Led by individual frontrunner Blake Maum's 7-under-par 135 (70-65), Gardner-Webb is third at 2-over-par 570 (288-282). Campbell (572) and James Madison (578) are fourth and fifth, respectively.
Â
RU received a balanced effort from its lineup for the opening 36 holes. Callum Tarren leads four Highlanders in the Top 10 at 4-under-par 138 (71-67), which is tied for second with USC Upstate's Taylor White.
Â
Coming off his first collegiate victory at last week's Davidson College Invitational, Conner Hayden continued his solid play with a 1-under-par 141 (71-70). The sophomore is tied for fifth with 18 holes remaining.
Â
Nick Brediger and Ryan Rettberg are tied for ninth at even-par 142 (71-71), while Tanner Carbaugh is tied for 25th at 3-over-par 145 (70-75).
Â
With a five-shot advantage, Radford will look to successfully defend its title when the Highlanders return to the course for Tuesday's final round. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m.
