SOFTBALL SWEPT AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE

RALEIGH, N.C. – Radford Softball was swept in a doubleheader at North Carolina State on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at Dail Stadium. The Highlanders (4-12) fell by the scores of 7-0 and 4-0.
 
Game 1 – North Carolina State 7, Radford 0
Radford dropped the opening game of its doubleheader, 7-0. The Highlanders were held to three hits by Wolfpack pitcher Emily Weiman, who finished the contest with five strikeouts and a walk.
 
Two of the hits came in the fifth, singles off the bats of sophomore Casey Burns and freshman Julie Gardner. The Highlanders also drew a walk in that frame, but were unable to get on the board.
 
Sophomore Whitney Davis recorded RU's third hit with a single in the seventh. Sophomore Rachael Walters went the distance in the circle, striking out seven and walking three.
 
NC State's Molly Hutchison was 2-for3 with a home run and six RBI. She gave the Wolfpack some breathing room with a fifth-inning grand slam, extending their lead to 7-0. Renada Davis also homered for the Wolfpack.
 
Game 2 – North Carolina State 4, Radford 0
 
In game two, freshman Abby Morrow put in another strong start in the circle, but Radford was held to two hits, falling to NC State, 4-0. The win extended the Wolfpack's (15-6) winning streak to 14.
 
She allowed three earned run on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Junior Kelsey Weddle closed the game with one inning of shutout ball with two punchouts.
 
Senior Jessie Hutchens and junior Mackenzie Blackwell each registered a single for the Highlanders.
 
Weiman went the distance for the Wolfpack in game two, striking out six and walking one.
 
The Wolfpack grabbed a 2-0 lead on single runs in the third and fourth innings, both coming with two outs.
 
NC State gave it some breathing room with a two-run sixth on a RBI double and run-scoring groundout. Weddle came in with no outs and a runner on third and fanned two, while freshman Julie Gardner nailed her second base runner of the game trying to steal second.
 
The Highlanders head to Auburn, Ala. For their final regular season tournament, the War Eagle Classic hosted by Auburn. Along with the host, Radford will face Ball State, Savannah State, Alabama A&M and IPFW.
