SOFTBALL OPENS BIG SOUTH PLAY AT CAMPBELL

Coming off its last regular season tournament, Radford Softball begins Big South play this weekend with a three game series at Campbell. The Highlanders (6-14, 0-0 Big South) and Fighting Camels (17-13, 3-0) are set to play a doubleheader at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and conclude on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
 
All three games will be video streamed live on the Big South Network and is free for all viewers.
 
Last Time Out – Radford went 2-2 at Auburn's War Eagle Classic picking up victories over Alabama A&M and Savannah State last Saturday… Senior Jessie Hutchens launched three home runs over the weekend, including two in the 6-3 win over Savannah State… In that game, freshman Summer Robinson broke a 3-3 deadlock with a three-run home run, the first of her career, in the bottom of the fifth and freshman Abby Morrow struck out a career-high nine and allowed just one hit over the final 4.1 innings to pick up her first collegiate victory… Against A&M, RU scored seven runs on eight hits over the final three innings en route to an 8-3 triumph… Sophomore Hayley Tabora and freshman Julie Gardner homered, sophomore Casey Burns registered three hits and freshman Kayla Bishton knocked in a pair with a double.
 
Highlander Bites – Hutchens has homered five times in her last nine games, moving her into a tie for 10th on RU's career list (21)… She also matched the school recorded for the 20th time with her two long balls against SSU… Hutchens, who has reached base safely in 13 of her last 14 games, paces RU in hits (20), average (.345), home runs (6), runs (12), RBI (13) & slugging (.690)... Morrow's career-best nine punchouts capped off a busy week in which she struck out 28 batters in 17.1 innings (5 app.), which included a then-career best six (4 IP) versus Ball State, four (2.1 IP) against high-powered Auburn, five (2.0 IP) against A&M and four (5.0 IP) at N.C. State… Tabora's home run was the first of her career… Junior Kelsey Weddle earned her first career victory against Alabama A&M… Sophomore Becky Mantel was plunked four more times last weekend, moving her season total to 11 and career to 31, second all-time in the record books... RU is three wins shy of 600 in program history.
 
Big South – Entering its 23rd season of Big South play, Radford is 183-129 in league games, 106-35 (.751) since 2006…RU is 13-9 in league openers, 5-5 on the road… Won five straight BSC openers with last loss coming at home versus Winthrop, 0-2 (4/5/08)… First league opener against a school other than Liberty since 2009 (at Gardner-Webb)… The Highlanders first game in program history was also their first Big South contest, dropping a 3-2 affair to the Camels in Buies Creek on Feb. 25, 1992… That was the last time RU opened league play at Campbell.
 
The Camels – Campbell is coming off a series sweep, in its Big South opener at Liberty last weekend… The Camels were powered by Big South Player of the Week, Milly Martinet who was 8-for-18 with five home runs and 12 RBI versus the Lady Flames… She leads the team with 11 long balls and is tied for the NCAA lead in that category… She also has a team-best .379 average and .793 slugging percentage and a Big South-high 34 RBI… Ericka Nesbitt is batting .354 with 15 runs, 15 RBI, 15 stolen bases… In the circle, five pitchers own two or more wins led by Katie Baker (6-5) with a 3.17 ERA and staff-best 89 strikeouts… Courtney Roberts is 5-4 with a team-best 2.60 ERA.
 
The Series – Campbell owns a 21-9 lead in the series, following a series sweep in Radford last season… The Camels won by the scores of 9-8 (11), 4-3 and 11-4… In Campbell's return to the Big South, Radford took 2-of-3 in Buies Creek in 2012… The Camels won the opener, 8-4, before the Highlanders bounced back with 10-2 (6) and 2-0 victories.
 
Up Next – Radford hosts Charlotte for its home opener on Wednesday, March 26 at 3:00 p.m… The doubleheader will be the first games at the newly renovated RU Softball Field.
