WILD FINISH AS BASEBALL WALKS AWAY WITH 11-INNING VICTORY OVER BRYANT

BOX SCORE |

RADFORD, Va. –  Zach Woolcock capped of a wild comeback when he was hit with the bases loaded and Radford walked away with an 8-7 victory over Bryant in 11 innings on Sunday evening at RU Baseball Stadium. It completed a 7-1 homestand for the Highlanders (9-7).

Woolcock, who sent the game into extras with a two-out RBI single in a five-run ninth, was the third Highlander to get plunked in the inning, which also included an intentional walk. It allowed Radford to take the series from the Bulldogs (3-6), who were NCAA Regional participants last season.

The Highlanders sent 11 batters to the plate in the ninth, tallying six walks, one hit by pitch and two infield singles. In his second at bat of the frame, Woolcock sent the game into extras with a two-out RBI single off the pitcher's backside. A pair of free passes and a hit by pitch with the bases full accounted for three of the runs. Aaron Scoville also had an infield RBI single.

In the ninth and 11th alone, Radford's patience at the plate allowed its batters to draw seven walks and get hit four times. In addition, the Highlanders walked five times in the first four innings for a total of 12 free passes in this 4 hour and 33 minute marathon.

Coming in as a defensive replacement, Woolcock finished 1-for-1 in three plate appearances with two RBI and a run scored. Scoville finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. He finished the series, 7-for-12 with five runs and reached base 12 times in 17 plate appearances.

The Bulldogs pushed across two runs in the top of the first to grab a quick, 2-0 lead.

The Highlanders answered in the third. They took advantage of three walks and sacrifice flies by Patrick Marshall and Nygeal Andrews to even the contest in the third.

A pair of sac flies by the Bulldogs in the fifth broke the 2-2 deadlock. They added two more in the sixth on a two-run, two-out double by John Mullen and one more in the seventh for the 7-2 advantage.

Andrews, the seventh Highlander pitcher of the game, picked up the win tossing the 10th and the 11th. He scattered four hits, but recorded three strikeouts and did not walk a batter for his first win of the season.

Radford hits the road on Tuesday for a midweek road game at William & Mary with first pitch schedule for 4:00 p.m. The contest begins a stretch if nine road games.
