EARLY DEFICIT TOO MUCH FOR SOFTBALL, FALLS TO TOWSON

ELON, N.C. – Radford Softball could not overcome a 7-0 deficit and fell to Towson, 9-6 on Sunday morning at Hunt Softball Park on the campus of Elon University.
 
The Highlanders (4-9) fell behind 7-0 after four innings and 9-3 through five and a half and tried to mount a comeback each time. A three-run fifth and sixth and shutout relief from Abby Morrow got Radford back into the game, but Ambar Hickman came in an retired the Highlanders in order in the seventh for the save.
 
Freshman Kayla Bishton hit her first collegiate home run and knocked in two runs. Senior Jessie Hutchens, freshman Summer Robinson, sophomore Casey Burns and sophomore Nia Chiles each recorded two hits.
 
Radford outhit Towson, 10-8, but the Tigers also took advantage of eight free passes. Mo Hepner hit a pair of home runs and recorded five RBI and two runs for the Tigers (8-6).
 
A four-run third, followed by two more in the fourth put the Tigers ahead 7-0.
 
The Highlanders got three back in the bottom of the fifth, two on Bishton's two-run longball. However, Hepner hit her second long ball of the day to push the Tigers' advantage to 9-3. Further damage was avoided when sophomore Megan Honaker picked off the runner at first and Morrow ended the frame with her lone strikeout.
 
In the sixth, Burns, Chiles and Hutchens recorded consecutive RBI singles to get within 9-6, but the Highlanders were thrown out at third twice to put a damper on the rally.
 
Radford returns to action at approximately 3:30 p.m. against host Elon.
