WINTHROP WINS GAME TWO OF BASEBALL SERIES

BOX SCORE ROCK HILL, S.C. - The current rough stretch of games continued Saturday for Radford's baseball team as Winthrop (16-17, 8-3) posted a 7-4 victory over the Highlanders to take the first two games of a Big South series at Winthrop Ballpark. Radford has dropped five of its last six games and stands a game above .500 both overall (15-14) and in conference play (6-5). The series finale is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

After being shut out for the first time this season in Friday's opener, Radford took its first lead of the series in the top of the third. Chris Coia singled and stole second to set up an inning where Josh Reavis eventually drove in a run with a bases loaded hit by pitch. The Highlander lead was short-lived, however, as Winthrop responded with three runs on three straight base hits off RU starter Tyler Costello.

Costello (0-1), who was making his first appearance of the season after returning from an arm injury, went 5.1 innings and took the loss despite leaving the game with the lead. Ryan Meisinger inherited a pair of runners in the sixth with the Highlanders leading 4-3, but could not hold on to the advantage.

The Radford offense managed just six hits, all singles, as each team left seven runners on base.

The first three batters in the Eagle lineup, Leighton Daniels (2-5, 2 runs), Michael Patrick (2-4, run, RBI), and TJ Olesczuk (2-4, RBI), collected two hits apiece in a nine-hit attack for the day for Winthrop.

Blake Sipe drove in a run with a sac fly, Reavis plated another run with another bases loaded hit by pitch, and Josh Gardiner singled home a run in a three-run fourth inning for Radford. RU took a 4-3 lead, but only managed three base runners from that point.
