SOFTBALL TOPPED BY LONGWOOD, 6-4, IN BIG SOUTH ELIMINATION GAME

BOX SCORE

CONWAY, S.C. – Radford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third, but Longwood scored six unanswered runs to defeat the Highlanders, 6-4, on Friday afternoon in a Big South Tournament elimination game at CCU Softball Field.

With the defeat, Radford's season comes to an end at 22-30, while the Lancers improved to 39-15.

A four-run two-out rally put Radford up 4-0 in the third. Three consecutive RBI singles by Casey Burns, Summer Robinson and Mackenzie Blackwell made it 3-0. After a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Megan Honaker lined one off the pitcher's glove for the four-run lead.

However, Longwood tallied one in the bottom of the third and then evened the contest with a three-run fourth. In the game-tying inning, a RBI single cut RU's lead in half. With one out and the base loaded, RU took the out at first on a hard grounder that put Longwood within one, 4-3. The next batter, Chelsea Sciacca, tied the game with a two-out swinging bunt just in front of home plate.

The momentum continued for the Lancers, taking a 6-4 lead with a two-run fifth. The go-ahead run scored on a throwing error and Katie Shinrock's two-out RBI single added to the advantage.

Six different Highlanders recorded hits. Freshman Abby Morrow suffered the defeat in 2.2 innings of relief. She surrendered two runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Sophomore Rachael Walters started and lasted 3.1 innings. She surrendered four runs on four hits with a strikeout and three walks.

Elizabeth McCarthy picked up the complete game win. She struck out three and walk one, and allowed just one hit after Radford's four-run third.

Shinrock was 3-for-4 with a RBI and run, while Sciacca (2 RBI) and Jamie Barbour (2 runs) recorded two hits apiece for the Lancers.
