WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS HARD FOUGHT EXHIBITION TO WILLIAM & MARY

RADFORD, Va.  – Capping off its exhibition season, Radford women's soccer dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision against William & Mary on Saturday evening from Dedmon Center Field.

The Highlanders came out of the gate on the attack. Senior Jasmine Sampson's near post blast from 20 yards was knocked aside by Tribe keeper Caroline Casey in the second minute. On the ensuing corner kick by freshman Jordan Lundin, redshirt-sophomore Hannah Thomas connected on a well struck header from just outside the six, but the ball was tipped over the crossbar by Casey.

"I thought we had a great work ethic tonight," said head coach Ben Sohrabi. "Our defense as a team was well organized and we put in a lot of effort. On the attack, we had chances and hopefully next time out we will finish a couple."

Sammie Grasso put the Tribe on top 1-0 in the 8th minute. She got in behind the defense on a long through ball and slotted it into the open net for the game's only goal.

Freshman Katie McCormick started the second half between the pipes and provided Radford with superb effort in net. She finished the final 45 with eight saves. Sophomore Sydney Chervenic made the start and held her own in the first half pushing aside four Tribe shots.

The Highlanders had a couple of chances to equalize in the final 30 minutes. On a corner kick, freshman Gabby Brannon's 10-yard shot was slightly deflected by a Tribe defender and bounced just past the post. In a last second effort, sophomore Hannah Duff whizzed a shot a few feet wide as the clock dipped under 10 seconds.

Radford opens the regular season at ETSU on Friday, August 22.
