WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENS 2014 SEASON ON FRIDAY AT ETSU

Radford women's soccer opens its 2014 campaign at East Tennessee State on Friday, Aug. 22. The Highlanders and Buccaneers kick off the season at 7:00 p.m. from Summers-Taylor Stadium.
 
A LOOK AT YOUR HIGHLANDERS: Coming off a 15-win campaign and second straight Big South regular season championship, Radford enters 2014 with a new look… The Highlanders graduated nine seniors and added nine newcomers… Under the guidance of 19-year head coach Ben Sohrabi, RU welcomes back four starters from last year's squad; senior defenders Stephanie Herb and Caitlin Annear, junior forward Asyia Mitchell (2G, 1A) and sophomore defender Miranda Carlson… In addition, senior Kara Wade (2G, 1A), juniors Sally Dillinger (1G, 1A), Kim Harkins and Shannon Nasca and sophomore Britney Kendall saw significant time off the bench… Kendall is the program's top returning scorer with five goals, three assists and 13 points… With the departures of several key players from a season ago, seniors Annabel Bergin (1G, 1A) & Jasmine Sampson (2G), junior Carley Keer and a group of sophomores and freshmen will also make immediate impacts this upcoming year... A trio of goalkeepers, sophomore Sydney Chervenic, along with freshmen Katie McCormick and Maddie Malueg will be competing for an open spot between the pipes after the graduation of four-year starter and three-time Big South Defensive Player of the Year, Che' Brown.
 
LAST SEASON: Radford won its second straight Big South regular season title and third in four seasons… The Highlanders made their third straight appearance in the league title game, but came up short in a bid for a three-peat… RU went 10-1 in league play, setting a league a program record for wins… The 15 victories matched the second best total in record books… Sohrabi was named Big South Coach of the Year… Brown was named Big South Defensive Player of the Year for the third time… Rachel Conway was named a First Team Academic All-American, the first in program history.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Radford dropped a pair of exhibition contests during the preseason, falling 1-0 to Miami (Ohio) and William & Mary, respectively.
 
THE BUCCANEERS: ETSU went 7-9-2 overall and 3-5-1 in the Atlantic Sun last season… The Bucs top two scorers, A-Sun Player of the Year Sarah Zadrazil (8G, 11 A) and Kristi Davis (7 G, 1 A) return… Both netminders, Anna Yancey (605:00) and Jasmine Elliott (1059:00), are also back as they combined for a 1.46 GAA, 96 saves and five shutouts.

THE SERIES: This is the 15th meeting in the series with ETSU holding a slight advantage, 7-5-2… The squads last met on Aug. 26, 2012 with the Bucs edging the Highlanders, 1-0 in Johnson City… Following that match, RU went on a record breaking 17-game unbeaten streak, which ended at the NCAA tournament by eventual national champion North Carolina… ETSU has won the last four meetings, including the last three by one goal… RU last picked up a win in the series with a 3-1 triumph on Sept. 3, 2006 in Cupp Stadium.
