HIGHLANDERS FACE NATIONALLY-RANKED CHARLOTTE ON SUNDAY

|

Radford's tough road lineup to begin the season continues Sunday at nationally-ranked Charlotte. The 49ers are ranked No. 23 in the nation as the preseason polls close and the regular season begins. Sunday's game is the first of the season for Charlotte. Radford dropped its opener Friday at Clemson, 1-0. The Radford Alumni Association will host a pre-game social in Charlotte for Highlander fans.

UPDATE: The Alumni event listed in the infographic below has been changed. All RU alumni are now meeting at the game at 6:00 p.m.

These two teams have not played since the 2006 season. From 2002-06, the series was played five straight years. Charlotte has won two straight in the series and leads overall 3-1-3. RU won a 1-0 decision in Radford in the 2002 campaign. The teams fought to draws in back-to-back seasons in 2003 and 2004. The first two games in the sereis were played in 1992 (6-2 UNCC) and 1993 (1-1 tie). Neither team has ever lost at home in the series. The 49ers are 3-0-1 all-time in games play in Charlotte. The Highlanders own a 1-0-2 record in Radford.

SCOUTING THE 49ERS
Charlotte began the season in 2013 with a 4-5-3 record before running off eight straight wins en route to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The 49ers lost to Big South champion Coastal Carolina in the second round of the national playoffs a year ago. Charlotte was impressive in its preseason exhibition games posting shutout wins over UNC Asheville (7-0) and Davidson (2-0).

THE HIGHLANDERS
Radford's bid to knock off ACC opponent Clemson came up just short Friday as the Tigers scored with just under five minutes to play to defeat RU, 1-0. Aitor Pouseu Blanco recorded four saves in his first career appearance in goal. The RU defense allowed just five shots on goal, and the team took a number of positives out of its season opener, according to head coach Marc Reeves.
